Feeling Anxious: Tips for Young People

A resource designed for young people explaining what anxiety is, common signs to look out for, and simple, actionable techniques to help manage worried feelings.

What is Anxiety?

Feeling anxious is a normal human emotion. It's our body's natural response to danger or stress. However, if these feelings become constant, overwhelming, or start stopping you from doing things you enjoy, it might be anxiety.

Common Signs of Anxiety

Look out for these signs in yourself or your friends:

  • Physical: Racing heart, shortness of breath, feeling shaky, headaches, or stomach aches.
  • Emotional: Feeling worried, scared, or having a sense of dread that won't go away.
  • Behavioural: Avoiding situations, difficulty sleeping, restlessness, or struggling to concentrate.

Simple Things That Can Help

  1. Talk to Someone: Share how you're feeling with a trusted adult, like a family member, coach, or welfare officer.
  2. Use Calming Techniques: Try deep breathing (in slowly for 4, hold for 4, out slowly for 6) or grounding exercises (like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique).
  3. Get Moving: Exercise is a great way to use up nervous energy, reduce stress, and boost your mood.
